Six decades later, the route remains unchanged: pilots trace the Niagara Gorge from Queenston to the American Falls, bank over the whirlpool, then descend to frame all three cataracts in a single pass. The vantage point compresses 12,000 years of glacial erosion into four minutes of flight time, revealing the plunge pools, the scoured bedrock shelf, and the 58-metre drop that moves 2,800 cubic metres of water every second.
Niagara Falls aerial tours operate year-round from a heliport on Victoria Avenue, less than two kilometres from the brink. The classic sightseeing loop pairs rotor flight with a Hornblower cruise, granting access to two perspectives most visitors experience separately: the thermal lift above the gorge and the spray zone at the base of the Horseshoe. The combination originated as a concierge package for casino guests in the 1990s and migrated to public booking platforms by the mid-2000s. Today it accounts for nearly half of all helicopter reservations between May and October.
The appeal is geometric. From street level, the falls present as a horizontal curtain; from the boat deck, a wall of descending water. Only altitude resolves the cataract's true shape: a crescent 670 metres wide, curved around a plunge pool that has retreated 11 kilometres upstream since the last ice age. Pilots hold position for 20 seconds at the apex, long enough for passengers to register the scale of the Niagara River's watershed—draining four of the five Great Lakes through a single throat of dolomite and shale. The geology is legible from above in a way no walking tour can convey: the caprock overhang, the talus slopes, the mist plume that rises 30 metres even on windless days. Reservations open 90 days in advance, with morning departures offering the clearest sightlines before afternoon haze settles over the gorge.
